A Bluejacket 33
A Bluejacket 33
So what is a Bluejacket, well the Bluejacket series of wooden power cruisers were designed by the late Tom Lathrop of Oriental, NC. After designing the first Bluejacket a 24' aptly named LIZ for his wife Elizibeth. Tom went on to conceive the 25.5, 27, 271 and lastly the 28. Technically Dixie Dime is a stretched and drastically reimagined Bluejacket 28 with thirty inches added midship and another twenty-six added aft with the extended running surface ski step motor mount. Make no mistake though Dixie Dime's underside follows Tom's design very closely albeit a little longer. The original design carried the motor in a well in the rear of the cockpit which disguised the OB power but took up valuable cockpit space. Moving the propulsion to the transom allowed the cockpit to be increase while still making more space available for the cabin. The cockpit was sized to just allow her 90 gal. fuel tank to be remove if the need ever arose. Speaking of cabin space Dixie Dime's main cabin spans just under fourteen feet long with lots of head room. Her additional length also allowed for a proper head with a dedicated shower area though the whole head is set up to drain into the shower drain. The forward V-berth was also length to some degree resulting in a berth longer and wider than a California King albeit shaped like a V of course. Her galley and cabinets space rivals what is in many small homes. The cabin top was extended over the cockpit which netted a twenty-four-foot-long hard top with ample space for solar panels to give DD the ability to be off grid and still have creature comforts. All the systems onboard were design to work on her trailer equally as well as while on the water. The heat pump is an inverter air to air such as might be carried on an RV as are the appliances. She carries a grey water tank so when she is on the trailer, she will not be marking her territory. Dixie Dime could be categorized as a boat that makes for a pretty good camper or a camper that can pass for a nice cruising boat. To us it doesn't really matter, she is simply Dixie Dime and a very special girl indeed.
